Solar activity report

Any mentioned solar flare in this report has a scaling factor applied by the Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC). Because of the SWPC scaling factor, solar flares are reported as 42% smaller than for the science quality data. The scaling factor has been removed from our archived solar flare data to reflect the true physical units.

Joint USAF/NOAA Report of Solar and Geophysical Activity

SDF Number 244 Issued at 2200Z on 01 SEP 1997

IA. Analysis of Solar Active Regions and Activity from 31-2100Z to 01-2100Z

SOLAR ACTIVITY WAS LOW. REGION 8076 (N28W28) REMAINS THE DOMINANT FEATURE VISIBLE, NUMBERING 28 SPOTS AND MEASURING 210 MILLIONTHS IN WHITE LIGHT. THE REGION WAS STABLE THROUGHOUT THE DAY, AND THE LIKELY SOURCE OF THE C1 X-RAY EVENT AT 0238Z. NEWLY NUMBERED REGION 8082 (N22E70) APPEARED, MAKING A TOTAL OF FIVE SUNSPOT GROUPS IN VIEW. FREQUENT TYPE III SWEEP EVENTS AND RADIO BURSTS AT LOW FREQUENCIES OCCURRED AGAIN THROUGHOUT THE INTERVAL.
IB. Solar Activity Forecast
SOLAR ACTIVITY SHOULD PERSIST AT LOW LEVELS. REGION 8076 SHOULD PRODUCE OCCASIONAL C-CLASS FLARES.
IIA. Geophysical Activity Summary 31-2100Z to 01-2100Z
THE GEOMAGNETIC FIELD WAS QUIET TO SLIGHTLY UNSETTLED.
IIB. Geophysical Activity Forecast
THE GEOMAGNETIC FIELD IS EXPECTED TO BE QUIET THROUGHOUT THE PERIOD.
