A moderate G2 geomagnetic storm watch has been issued by the NOAA SWPC for Monday, 22 January and Tuesday, 23 January. This is due to the expected arrival of a coronal mass ejection launched by a eruption south of sunspot region 3557 early yesterday morning.
The resulting coronal mass ejection looks like an asymmetrical full halo coronal mass ejection with the bulk of the plasma cloud heading south-east based on imagery from SOHO/LASCO. The asymmetrical halo outline means it is highly likely that at least part of the cloud will impact Earth which in turn will cause enhanced geomagnetic conditions. The cloud has a launch speed of about 600km/s which is not very high and we personally do not expect an impact until the early hours of Tuesday, 23 January but nonetheless we recommend everyone to keep their eyes on the solar wind data in the days ahead to see when the impact occurs and how strong the resulting storm will be. Happy hunting!
