Minor G1 geomagnetic storm

Its summer in the northern hemisphere and that means many of us are enjoying a well earned vacation. However, the same thing can be said about our Sun. She is taking it very easy with pretty much no noteworthy eruptions or other solar events to talk about during the past few weeks. We did have the brief appearance of a sunspot region that belongs to Solar Cycle 25 but it disappeared as quickly as it appeared. Make no mistake, we are likely still at or close to solar minimum. That said, we do have something to talk about today as we unexpectedly reached minor G1 geomagnetic storm conditions yesterday and today!

Coronal hole faces Earth

It's been a little while since we've last had some news for you. Ever since sunspot region 2740 and 2741 disappeared from the earth-facing solar disk, solar and auroral activity has truly tanked back to solar minimum levels with no solar events or geomagnetic activity worth mentioning. That changes today however as a coronal hole is facing our planet today.

Strong G3 geomagnetic storm

Strong G3 geomagnetic storm conditions were observed earlier today as a coronal mass ejection arrived at our planet.

Filament eruption, yet another CME

The sunspot regions that have been facing Earth the past few days are slowly disappearing but our Sun continues to launch coronal mass ejections into space. A filament eruption took place around 19 UTC yesterday evening near sunspot region 2741 and a coronal mass ejection managed to escape the Sun's gravity.

Faint partial halo coronal mass ejection

Sunspot region 2740 has been much less active as it has been decayed the past few days. But that didn't mean it went totally quiet. A minor eruption near the this sunspot region took place around midnight UTC yesterday and launched a faint partial halo coronal mass ejection that could arrive at Earth in a few days from now.

CME passage, G1 geomagnetic storm

CME passage, G1 geomagnetic storm

The minor G1 geomagnetic storm was reached earlier today at 02:20 UTC. This is caused by a coronal mass ejection passage that brings a persistent southward pointing magnetic field with it. This coronal mass ejection that we are seeing at Earth right now is likely the coronal mass ejection that we posted about on 8 May.

Sunspot region 2740, C9.9 solar flare

Понедельник, Май 6 2019 - 17:08 UTC

Sunspot region 2740, C9.9 solar flare

Almost an M-class solar flare! Sunspot region 2740 (Beta-Delta) produced a very impulsive C-class solar flare this morning at 05:10 UTC. The solar flare peaked at an X-ray flux of C9.97 which is just shy of the M-class threshold. The eruption was associated with an Type II Radio Emission and several more C-class solar flares occurred as the day progressed.

Far side fireworks

Not much to report on the earth-facing side of the moment but the Sun's far side has sprung back to life with two distinct areas firing off eruptions.

Coronal hole faces Earth

Aurora season is now rapidly coming to an end for high latitude sky watchers in the northern hemisphere but the night skies for our friends in the southern hemisphere are only getting darker and darker. Good news for you as we have a coronal hole facing our planet today which is sending a high speed solar wind stream towards our planet.
