There's a link on this page: https://www.ngdc.noaa.gov/stp/GEOMAG/kp_ap.html
The .fmt file describes how the data is layed out.
ftp://ftp.ngdc.noaa.gov/STP/GEOMAGNETIC_DATA/INDICES/KP_AP/kp_ap.fmt

I gather the year is picked up from the file name, in this case 2010. Apr 5 (0405)

1004052411 13033537757504337380 15 18 56179 67 48 32 22 551.67 26 79.30

There are no delimiters. A space basically means leading 0.

For my purposes I'll focus on columns 29-31, Kp daily sum to the nearest third. In this case 380.

If anyone might want to suggest a better value to use for summing up each day, please advise.

What exactly are these?
Ap = PLANETARY EQUIVALENT DAILY AMPLITUDE
Cp = PLANETARY DAILY CHARACTER FIGURE

Tried backticks from markdown for fixed width, didn't work, removing them
