Why is the "Observed" plot much more smooth than the "Predicted" plot? Are observations only made every hour, while predictions are made every couple of minutes? Personally, I find this the least scientific widget of data on the home page and serves an identical purpose to other widgets. But, this is coming from an "uneducated" background, and someone looking at various other sources of Earthly feedback. I don't see a correlation between this graph and ANYTHING else.

It's more smooth because the observed data is updated every hour and predicted data is provided every minute. Observed data is from real observatory measurement of the past hour, the predicted is computer model based prediction based on current space weather data and is more fluctuating.
